How to spot 'curl' and 'fiddleback' in a log
Offered some Blackwood trees recently and a couple of them displayed tell tale signs that they were going to be sensationally figured
Seems to occur only in a small percentage of trees though
Look closely at the trunk surface and you will notice prominent grain compression
This particular tree will be 'fiddleback' from the inside out and the whole length of the bole
Out of 12 trees only 2 had this feature
The tree pictured was around 75cm D.B.H...MMMapleman

All the boards pictured were from this log...it had fallen over which is very common for Blackwoods as they have a very shallow root system
The heads were heaped to be burnt with the butt Log to become charcoal too
Soon put an end to that ...MM<strike></strike>Mapleman
