    Default spotted gum

Hi, newbie here with a spotted gum deck problem.
I am at the end of an extensive reno where the original builder built a spotted gum deck for me (2 years ago) and his painter 'oiled' the deck. Part of the deck is in constant weather ie rain and sun, and the remainder is undercover. Not knowing any different I got myself worked up that the deck was exposed and had to be re-oiled, so I went and got some deck clean, oil and all the trimings and washed the deck. It looked patchy with the weathered sections almost bleached and the undercover sections still oiled, so I went and asked a paint suppliers opinion, he told me I needed to sand the deck, re-wash and use a stain (Intergrain).
I have sanded the deck and re-washed and it still looks patchy, I have since talked to another supplier and he informs me I need to use an oil.
My problem is that I have the deck in the weather, without any oil on it to protect it, is this a major problem? I haven't been able to get a couple of consecutive days where I can wash and apply two-three coats of oil, so I'm concerned that I am causing more damage waiting.
    cheers

Wooden decks are always going to be problematic and you will never be able to keep the natural colour of the wood - it will always go grey and patchy no matter what oil you put on it. If they guy who built your deck told you otherwise then he was telling you a porky. Thats why tinted/coloured/stained oils or deck treatments are used, then you know you can always get back to the same ( somewhat false) colour. The alternative is to let it go grey but you will have patches for many years while waiting for that to happen.

As for the weather, what about rigging up a temporary cover using a tarp and a few tent poles while you are doing the treatment.
