I want to lay a solid timber floor for a new house. The substrate is 22mm STRUCTAflor ( Particleboard) on engineered I-Joists. I have been advised that I can glue the boards directly to the STRUCTAflor using the "plank on ply" method.

I plan to use wide boards 150 -180 mm X 14 mm of either Sydney Blue gum or Brushbox or Karri

My question is - do I really need to use T+G boards or can I use square dressed planks? What purpose does the T+G serve when glued on top of ply?

    Thanks in advance

i would use TandG without a doubt , square edge or properly called shot edge boards will move individually and probably break the glue bond and or squeak and all kinds of nasty things .
shot edge boards are for use outside where they will be rained on, mainly so that they can move and water can drain off the floor and not lay in puddles they are no where near as strong as a t&g floor because each board is not supported by the next one
