Any suggestions on Spruce alternatives for instrument
Hi there,
I am looking at building a nickelharpa
I’m following the plans/book written by Sören Åhker
It says to use alpine spruce or Swedish spruce but as I’m in Australia it’s proving difficult to find a source.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what timber would be a good alternative, I need something that would sound similar and has similar properties.
I’m also quite new to woodworking so I am throwing myself in the deep end so it’s going to be a learning experience haha
Thanks

welcome to the forums.
it looks as though you have chosen a challenging first woodworking project.
Perhaps, it will be your second or third project -- with a work bench being your first.
You didn't mention where you have tried to source Swedish or Alpine spruce, but similar northern hemisphere timbers are available in Australia, from places like

this is a tone wood comparison site Tonewood Data Source - Tonewood Data Source
if you are technically inclined this paper will be interesting https://www.timelessinstruments.com/...tiveWoods1.pdf
I would encourage you to spend the extra to get a wood as close as possible to that used in the prototype you are copying to avoid disappointment with the instrument's final sound.regards from Alberta, Canada
