    Default Timber I.D

Brought home a stash of hardwood logs from my old mill site, the pics are from a Butt log trimming..different to Forest Red Gum in a few ways and very durable, not overly heavy, but brilliant red/pink colour, also was growing near a watercourse/floodplain area...the pics incidently are of end grain..i was thinking River Red Gum..hope someone can shed a little light on this one..Cheers MM

Be interesting to see that once it has been exposed to the light for a while.

doubt its ~Red River Gum from your description.

I was thinking the same Art, wondering if it does the Dead Finish trick of losing the fabulous colour.

Here's some quater-sawn boards..it cuts like butter, with no real smell to it,and was growing near Woodford..it is lighter in weight than Forest Red Gum as well..really stunning colour though ..MM

I had some red stringy aka red mahogany that was a bright red when cut, but quickly turned to its normal red/brown, it also cuts like butter

    Default Swamp Mahogany ?

Could it be Swamp Mahogany Mapleman? The density is only 48lbs ft^3 and it has thick yellowish sapwood. I have often seen them with belled butts like your log. Timboz

Done some reseach timboz..i don't think it is swamp mahogany, there are signs of deterioration of some the heartwood,so not as durable as i first thought, also the colour doesn't seem to match(swamp mahogany is reddish/brown as opposed to pinkish/red)..Cheers MM

    Chris,
It doesn't look like any of the Red River Gum that I have seen.
When did you say you were going to list on the Market Place. See, I done it right this time.

    Bob.
