This site suggests that black palm doesn't get that big. Still think it's coconut based on the size.

    Cheers

    Question

Just looked up your site Mic.

I am not sure that the source is Central America. The Black Palm is the only relative, as far as I know, of the Foxtail Palm. The foxtail palm grows only in Australia while the Black Palm Grows in Australia and up through the islands into Burma and Thailand.

The supplies in Australia come mostly from Burma ( Myanmar).

The tree certainly is tall and slender, and very slow growing. I have seen specimans in the Daintree that would be close to 250mm in diametre bot most are smaller than .this.

I've also seemn bowls turned from Black Palm that are about 150 to 170mm. dia.

Boards of the size shown are not to be unexpected but would be the exception rather than the rule.

Trouble with Coconut Palm is that there are many species. The timber from each is slightly different to the others. It is being grown in Fiji as furniture Timber.I also have some off cuts here that are from the posts for a Bali hut.

For mine black Palm is considerably denser. IMHO The photos shown are more likely to be Black Palm.

AWESOME.... oops I meant to say thats a bit of rubbish not even suitable for a knife handle, you better send it to me so I can get rid of it!!!!

I would agree that it is probably a bit of palm of some description and would be really nice used in something like a knife handle or similar where the grain gets exposed at different angles.
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

    Exclamation

Did a bit more reseach. There is more than one tree referred to as Black Palm and one does indeed reside in Central America. The look of this species is entirely different to our native species.

Looks a lot like the imported coconut boards from Fiji that I've got. THe Fijians who I work with recognised it immediately.

    Heavy, too, by the way.

    Cheers,
