no fly zone
I've done another cut perpendicular to the tangent of the growth ring.
It took me a little longer than expected as I imposed a 'no fly zone' in my shed on large hunks of timber (flying from the saw blade).

no fly zone imposed in shed - no more flying pieces of wood - very careful with this cut. pics show the mottled growth ring.

That's a shorea for sure, of which meranti is one. But I don't know if it is meranti or another type. But if the general consensus is that it is meranti/PM, I'm happy to call it that too.
Cheers
