    Default Timber identification

I have recently acquired quite a bit of this but have no idea what it is, I've been told it was black wood first but I think it's too light in cookout and density. And then silky oak. But was hoping someone could tell me for real what it is. It was free by the way.

Silky oak, it is either northern or southern. both are a pleasure to work with. Just wear a dust mask when sanding or routing as the dust can be irritating to some people

hmmm. Looking at the 1st picture I'd say the 4 planks on the left might well be blackwood. The two on the right seem a bit light, and not much contrast there. The small picture on the other hand doesn't look much like blackwood at all, the grain seems all wrong. My first thought was Banksia, but the flecks aren't there, ... Collector probably knows better than I do, I've never had the opportunity to see silky oak over here.

Yep, I would agree, The smaller white piece is Silky Oak. The other boards appear to be some nice Tassie Blackwood.

    Regards,

Southern silky Oak (Grevillea robusta) - it should have a slightly waxy feel on a fresh planed face.
