Default Timber Identification - any guesses?

    Hi Guys,

Was collecting some bits and pieces from a tree lopper today and he had this old log he was slabbing.
No idea what it is, any ideas?

It has a slight smell of diesel when freshly cut, then a pleasant smell when sniffing the wood closer.

It is very hard and very heavy.

He gave me a slab to play with, but offered the lot if I wanted it.

    Any help would be great.

    Cam.

Oh, the tree is dead straight and quite tall.

It also had no bugs or termites - logs right next to it were riddled.

It certainly sounds like it, but from what I've read Turpentine is red/brown with pale sapwood.

This timber is pale and has a slight pink sapwood.

I thought maybe Stringybark - White or Yellow...

I'd say turps too, the smell is the main identifier. The colour can vary considerably, both pieces in below are turps.

Turps is very common in our area and I get to mill a lot of it. The colour varies greatly tree to tree. Even trees growing close to each other will often be different. Your description certainly resembles turps, as do the pics. The lack of colour may well be due to poor growing soil. The smell is typical and the lack of borer attack also points to turps.

Is it any good!? My oath, one of the best. Can be used for anything. Highly durable both in and above ground, white ants hate it, borers hate it. Also marine use as it stands up to marine borer. Dries well. And yes, its worth a dollar.
