Timber Identification Help
Hey all.
I cannot seem to remember the name of this timber I was given a while ago.
The man who gave it to me has since moved away and I have no contact with him.
The photos don’t really do it justice so I will describe it the best is can.
It is quite yellow in comparison to the photo. It does seem to be oily and the saw dust is nearly identical to Tumeric.
It was milled from a tree on his property here in FNQ so could have indo/Papuan origin.
I do remember him saying you can get it in a yellow or a white grained timber. Although it’s very yellow when sanded it seems to darken a lot when clear coated.
Thanks!

I'm no expert, but as soon as I saw the photo's following your description Osage Orange jumped straight in to my head.

It looks like Soft Cheesewood *, Nauclea orientalis to me. Only found across northern Australia (not in southern states like Osage). It is found in PNG and Indo as you have noted.
That sticky sawdust making sanding near impossible

* PS Also called Leichardt Tree & Yellow Cheesewood

Have a photo of a turned item of this wood (at the AWTEX show in Mooorabin) if you are interested in seeing it.
