Timber Newcastle- any further sources?
Hi,
Thanks for your time.
Earlier this month, BernMC asked about Marshalls in Newcastle, and was also advised about a demo place near Warnervale.
Are there any other decent timber merchants in the area? I’m looking start learning to make furniture but have very limited machinery available. I love the idea of milling from rough, but it ain’t gonna happen soon.
My other question is: what native woods might I be best to start with without getting so dispirited with insanely hard Australian timbers.
Tas Oak (in all its species & guises)?
Thanks!!!

There are lots of other sources of timber. I break up a lot of pallets and get some really nice stuff -coloured exotics, pine, mahogany. There are also lots of tree surgeons around who are happy to part with stuff they are cutting out of backyards and building sites for free, any amount of silkyoak, camphor laurel, jacaranda, mulberry, etc.

Thanks Len.
I’m going to have to start with dimensioned / dressed timber as I have no way of milling anything. I have a circ saw and a small bandsaw.
All the pallets I see around here are some sort of softwoods I think.
I don’t fancy ruining what few tools I have on rusty nails etc. in reclaimed stuff quite yet.

Here are a couple more bookmarks you can use, though I haven't dealt with these folks yet:
Products - Toronto Timber
Hardwood Timber Supplier in Newcastle | Sweetmans Timber Pty Ltd
Also depends on how far you want to travel, there's North Shore Timber & Hardware in Gosford. I have dozens of bookmarks covering Sydney - sometimes it's worth packing a trailer and a sandwich...

Wood-kook, how much are you after? I have rough sawn red cedar and silky oak in approx 25mm lying around home. I enjoy machining timber so I’m happy to sell you pieces cut and dressed to the size you need (if I have it). They are the timbers I like to work with, not too heavy, beautiful colours and easy to work with hand tools (silky oak gets a bit splintery).
I have some 45mm blackwood as well, but it would be more expensive because I find it harder to get cheaply on gumtree etc.

Sorry not replied sooner.
Thanks very much!
I may yet take you up in your offer, depending on where you are.
I reckon a mission to find some nice timber to throw on the roof rack would be a great excuse to get the family out for and adventure.
cheers.
