Timber supplier in Sydney
Back up in the big smoke today and tomorrow and I'm looking to pick up some blackbutt or similiar for a bathroom vanity. Can anyone recommend a good supplier in the Sydney area? Has to be open Sat. as I'm in the office today. TIA.

Depends what you mean by the Sydney area.
Do you have a car with you?
If so, head out to Trend timbers at McGraths Hill (out near Windsor).
If not, try Anagote.
Don't know if they are open Saturdays. I've never used them.
BTW, Trend close at 12.00 ao go early.
Cheers

Thanks Craig, yep got the car this time so Windsor is OK. Was hoping for Bankstown or Balmain or something closer in but Windsor will do. I know there's a recycling place at Bankstown but it's hit and miss. Mostly old windows and doors etc...

No prob Darren.
Anagote are in Leichardt I think so may be worth a phone call if you don't fancy the Windsor trip.
PS
Make sure you get your Bunnings fix while your in town.
(sorry, couldn't resist)

C,
dependant on what you're after Anagote & Trend are the best. if you're after basics you can get good prices from north shore timbers (try Thornleigh 02 9875 4014)
or
brads burls
http://www.bradsburls.com.au
or
the woodworks
http://www.thewoodworks.com.au/
I know 2 good scrap wood places that have reasonable selections on the north shore - ones a recycler the other is a recycling centre - if you're interested give me a call via private mail and I'll contact you as they arnt far from my place and I'll hump out there with ya.Zed

Hey yeah, nearly forgot. There's a Bunnings right across the road from that recycling place in Bankstown. I hear they've got some cheap pine on sale. I could pick up some walnut stain and a tin of Estapol while I'm there. Who needs Blackbutt?

yep, ones a garbage dump which has a recycling section (basically old timbers laid out in rows in the weather) its on mona vale rd heading north past st ives before you get to the sikh temple on your right (down a slope to the right)... understand ? they got some really hefty bits of timber (hard & softwoods) last time I was there they had stuff as big as sleepers made from oregon! incredible!! you gotta pick and choose a bit but its cheap. It was on burkes backyard (they got lotsa sand/pebbles/rocks/crushed concrete too.....)
the other place was a fluke, while I was looking for the place above and got lost. I dont know what suburb it is but between mona vale and st ives. I could take you there but I dont know the name of the place all I really remember is that if you head north on mona vale road and take the turn off towards belrose and about 1km on your left (heading east) will lead you to a long convolouted laneway that eventually turns to dirt track and ends up in this suburb whatever it is... sorry! the place is more of a steptoe and son recycling centre - I was looking for some red iron bark I could turn into carving mallets. a lot of thier timber is old structural and building hardwood. I suppose you could look it up in the yellow pages ? I remember it was near a church and a tennis centre in a suburb that is down in the gully south of mona vale (acreage type lots...)Zed

Thanks Zed.
Yep I think I know where you mean re the place off monavale rd.
But I think the temple you refer to is the Bahai temple - not Sikh.
Wow you really got lost on the other one. From your description, it sounds like it might be in Oxford Falls.
I'll file both away for future reference.
Cheers

I've been inside that Ba'hai temple, didn't make any difference to me Isn't it at the top of Tumble Down Dick Hill?
Also been to the recycling place I think. Wasn't that the old rubbish tip? Used to work at Fairway Stairs at Brookvale and we always took the sawdust and offcuts up there and dumped them in the trench.
Wongo, thanks for the addresses, will check them out too."I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."

Silent,
If you're going to Trend, you could also try Canalpie at North Richmond - ph 4571 1570 -specialises in recovered timber & very helpful.
If you're going to Thornleigh Timber - good for basics, you're also not far from Hornsby Timber & Hardware in James St.
cheers

Hi silentC,
If you're going to be near Balmain, I'd second Scott's suggestion and recommend Ironwood. They have a good selection of recycled timbers there, including blackbutt in all sorts of sizes. The best part is, if you can't find what you want, you can walk next door to Swadlings, where you can pick from a reasonable amount of new blackbutt. I know they've definitely got it, because I've bought blackbutt there before. You can't beat the convenience; the two stores are so close together, I initially thought it was one big timber yard. IIRC, they close around 3pm on a Saturday.
If you want to venture down to Marrickville, Anagote's also got blackbutt. I don't have a recent price sheet, but a few months ago, they were quoting $10-12 per super foot for rough sawn blackbutt. If you need it machined, they charge $3.50/m. AFAIK, they are open 9-11:30 on Saturdays. While you're there, check out their offcuts bin, which usually has some interesting stuff going for only $2.
I've heard Trend recommended many times, but I've never been out there ... it's an awful long drive out to Windsor for me. Personally, I'd rather spend less time in my car, and more time picking through stacks of timber.
HTH!
Michael.
