    Default Timber Supplies in NZ

I'm in Hawkes Bay, North Island, NZ, and, until recently have despaired of getting anything like the variety of timber species you folks in Aussie seem to take for granted. But then, I came across ITM in Hastings, who have 140x50 mm boards of clear DAR in American oak, ebony, mahogany, pine, red cedar and a couple of other timbers. While it is hideously expensive, and not really what I want - I was looking for rimu if I could get it - ITM has given me hope that we don't have to settle for crap radiata every time, which was all we could get before, round here.

The local ITM probably source they timber through Timspec http://www.timspec.co.nz/default.htm

They should be able to order in anything on their price list for you, but Rimu etc are probably more expensive than the imported stuff.

There are also smaller amounts of wood from guys with small sawmills around the place, but you will generally just get airdried / rough sawn stuff.

    Thanks for that, Ian.

I haven't REALLY minded using radiata.... it has been cheap enough for me to learn on, but I moved here from timber country (Rotorua/Tokoroa) and for some reason Waipukurau Carters has been reluctant to supply the kiln dried clears I'm used to using. (I'm making furniture, mostly). We do have a small local macrocarpa mill who can supply kiln dried timber. What I'm really after is some heart rimu to add to the stuff I've been hoarding for when I can do nice tight joints. Might try the recyclers, there's plenty there! (All denailed and ready to go)

I moslty use Macrocarpa that I mill and dry myself but I also have some Bluegum and Lawson cypress.

The Mac is still a softwood, but a BIG step up from the radiata. It air dries fine and you should be able to buy it fairly cheap from a local mill. That clear radiata is pretty pricy
