Thread: Tree ID at Wanduon QLD

Looks like a red Bauhinia (Lysiphyllum carronii) with nice wood, dense dark heart & interesting grain.
Enjoy the IWCS MEETING!! Would even buy some if I was there

A number of Black Tea-tree, Sheoaks, Ironwoods here but this ones got me stumped. Quite a few about and their seed pods are the stand out. From afar they look like big red leaves but as you get closer the leaves are small roundish shaped and the red bits are the seed pods that turn brown as the age.

I'm on the way to a IWCS meet, so should be able to get an ID there, but just thought I'd ask the brains trust here first.

A leguminous plant as you see from those seed pods.
Also called an ebony although no connection with Diospyros.
Nice patterns in wood near where heart & intermediate wood meet. Very dense.
A common dryland tree in inland (northern & central) Qld. Flowers produce a sweet nectar.

Should not not be hard to find more. The butterfly like leaves, in pairs, are a giveaway as are the red tubular flowers.

I originally thought of Red Bauhinia, but when I checked TTITs site I thought the seed pod was different, his must have been an old dried one.

Euge shame you can't make it, we are going to Bloss Hickson's Huntly property and then onto another property Vern has lined up. About 12(?) IWCS members are going, been in the planning for quite a while now. On my list, Ooline/Dead Finish/Gidgee/Sandalwood/Ebony plus any other desert hardwoods, but we will be limited to what's already down. Should be a few photos to post if nothing else

Yes, i I would like to attend. I met Blos at the Charleville meeting in 2017.
Its a great area for wood collectors. Put Acacia microsperma on your list ... it’s a lovely wood too.
Ooline is wonderful for the wood & bark. A monospecific genus, remnant survivor from another age.

Hi Neil, I'm sure you'll enjoy the meeting. Gee you get around. If Harry and his wife are attending make sure he brings some more of those desert exotics home to us with him. Yes you're right, it's all self interest on my part.

What a coincidence, I'm camped at Bauhinia tonight . Passed a lot of them today, including a big one that had split with half on the ground, near a new bridge construction site (I'm sure I could blend in with the crews ). I don't want to fill the trailer early incase I need the room, but I can always back track if I have room on the way back, unfortunately it is half way along the 100kms of pretty rough dirt road.

As soon as you said 'big one with half on the ground' I thought well, you have to make the most of your opportunities.

I did stop to think about it

The place is Wandoan,the leaves if heart shaped, is a Bauhinia sp.

No Bowyakka on the farm Eug, apparently only further south.

I didn't score any Red Bauhinia but did get some of a huge White Bauhinia with a huge black centre. Ended up with ~1t of 10 species including Online burl


I'll post with photos after I unpack the trailer.

Never had any decent white Bauhinia either so would love to buy trade some, if you can spare some.
