Tree Identification
Can anyone tell me what this tree is? A couple of them were cut down on my local golf course, and I want to see about salvaging them for woodturning. However, it would be nice to know what it is that I am getting, and whether the timber is likely to turn up well.
A picture of the tree in question may be found here, and a (slightly blurred) closeup of the leaves may be found here. They seem to be quite popular decorative trees around Brisbane.
Thanks,
Tristan Croll

Tristan, From what I could make out from your photos, the trees are teriliana. If they have rough bark for about a metre or so at the base then the trunk is smooth and shiny above and the leaves are full of sooty mould then I have the right tree. They have a highly figured heartwood with a wide pale sapwood. We have slabbed a large specimen, 600mm diameter and it a made a very nice bar top. I have not turned it but from my experience it is very stable. Only go for the big ones.
ps It is a native rainforest tree from north Qld that used be classified as a Eucalypt that got a bit out of hand when planted in Brisbane as a street tree.

Thanks for your help. I believe you've hit the nail on the head. Methinks I'll have to go and collect them.
