Type of timber for old Verandah
Hello. I need to replace an old Verandah and am not sure of the type of timber to use. Most advice is for Merbau or other decking timbers. However, our home is 100 years old and we don't want modern looking timber....it would laugh at the house! We are quite happy with a nondescript timber that does not stand out. Something that ages ok without the need to paint, stain, varnish or oil. Any suggestions please?
Many thanks Bil

Kwilla (Merbau) is imported so probably not appropriate but it may be cheaper. I'd check what is available at one of your local timber mills. Some Ironbark or Tallowwood are usually available.

A lot of old homes out this way have floors and decking from Murray pine. It would age untreated in about 6 months at a guess.
Any timber will do better with some kind of treatment, oil etc.

You could have a chat with the folks at Radial Timbers in Melbourne. http://radialtimbers.com.au/ They supply several durable timbers. They might be able to help with what's suitable in native species for a verandah.
I should declare an interest, albeit one that's a bit in the future. I'm hoping to be supplying Radial with some choice free-range, organic, farm grown logs in 20 years.

These were put down 3 years ago 25x140mm red gum they are silvering nicely. The timber was green and I knew it would twist, move and shrink, just not sure how much. They were put down abutting each other and have opened up to average of 3-6 mm. The timber was surfaced only on the top and any deep saw marks were left. I took the arris off but should have taken a larger slice as have had to plane a few that cupped and lifted slightly.
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything, but they

Verandah timber flooring on old house
Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions. Unfortunately, we live in little town with only two Timber shops....both only have Merbau or Treated Pine. Maybe will have to go with Merbau. It seems that if we do not oil it etc it will go a grey colour....which may not be all that noticeable.
Many thanks
Bil
