Another unknown timber
Anyone have any idea what this is? The colour is about right and the pic is about full size. It came in a batch of stuff I picked up. tightly interlocked grain, but comes up nicely with a sharp plane. Seems to have quite a bit of nice quilting in it.

Sorry Alex I can't tell you, but I think I have its brother up here. The underlying grain is very similar as is the colour, but mine is 90x1000 of tight fiddleback - I'll see if I can get a photo. It came out of a house demolition amongst a bunch of 4"x3/4" timber, which at the time I thought might have been Toriliana.

I don't have much experience with QLD Maple. But I have a lot of experience with African Mahogany (Khaya). That pic looks almost identical to some sticks I have used. The small knot is also a dead ringer.
Have you noticed a funny smell when you cut a piece on the dock saw? Try letting the blade rub a little on it (burn) when you cut, see what happens.
I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
