Default How to make veneer strips - Poplar

I need to make up a whole lot of thin (0.8mm) strips (28mm wide) for a design I'm making.. There are two problems:

    1. How do I make such thin strips without wasting too much (or am I being optimistic here)?

    2. Can anyone supply Poplar in Australia at reasonable prices? It's a construction timber in the US but here it seems rare and expensive.

    Hi Brine,
Assuming that you can't buy poplar veneer, this is what I would do... thickness a poplar board to 28mm thick, then one edge, then I would take say 1.2mm slices off the edge on the bandsaw, re-surface the edge of the board and repeat slicing, then thickness sand pieces to 0.8mm.
Loss due to blade kerf and re-surface is gonna be about 1mm.

    Hope this helps,

    Pete.

Set up a good saw bench with a small diameter and thin, hollow ground blade. Pieces will come off with a very nice finish.

Thanks for the tips. I don't have a thickness sander so I might have to hand sand or scrape it I guess.

I had a PM on a possible source for poplar - thanks for that. I'll try to track some down and try the techniques out.

Hi Mike - I followed one of the ads on this site a few days back to your site. I didn't see any Poplar but the Aussie timber looks great. Unfortunately I do need 0.8mm and as clear as I can get it (I know it's hard with Poplar). I need it for the structural properties rather than look. I'll keep your site in mind for my more decorative projects!
