Default Veneered Tassie oak Partilcle borad in the ACT

    Hi there,

this is my first post and i was unsure of whether this was the right section or not, so just tell me if not.
I am currently doing a Year 12 HSC major project for Industrial tech timber at school, I am building a kitchen island (not on wheels) and was planning on using veneered 19mm Tasmanian oak Particle board for the shelves, I live in the Bega Valley (far south coast, NSW) and to buy a sheet of tassie oak is around $177, I know this price is probably about right but being a student and all and don't have much money as i would like , I was wondering if anyone new of anywhere in the ACT or near by that sells Tassie oak veneer for a reasonable price. Postage does not have to be added on as i can go get it if in the ACT.

    Thanks,
    Any help is much appreciated.

I was ringing up a few joineries in Canberra and got one quote of $94.80 before tax for a sheet of Tassie oak, which i thought was pretty good.

The Stig, Fyshwick Builders Suppliers carry 1200x2400 veneered craftwood, not sure on the prices.

Depending how much trouble you want to go to to save money, a few of the second hand places (and the the recyclers at Mugga Tip) often have tassie oak desks that have been thrown away as surplus for the public service. These often have a large top of around 1.8m x .9m as well as side panels that are the depth of the table and around 700mm high.

I have bought them for as low as $10 and as much as $30 and used them to make other items. Edge veneer from Bunnings and elsewhere to finish or use solid tassie oak strips or mouldings on edges.

The second hand dealer the Handyman's Trading Post at34 Geelong St Fyshwick ACT 2609 often has panels of various types including tassie oak - make sure you know your new price 1st, but they usually sell at half price or less.
