Default White oak and select tassie oak suppliers Melbourne

Looking for both these timbers. I have asked:

Brittons timber - prices are good, all rough sawn, I dont think they have milling services
WR timber - prices slightly higher than Brittons but not by much and charge about $2.50/lm to dress timbers
Whelan the warehouse - expensive. select tassie oak is 'hydrowood' so is old growth which is nice but much more expensive compared to brittons and WR timber

anywhere else I can ask? I know mitre 10/home timber and hardware will have select tassie oak but they tend to be really expensive. Mathews timber will have both too but also too expensive.

Check out Global Hardwoods, he consistently has the best US White Oak compared to our other suppliers.

Mittagong is only 7 hours by road from Melbourne and I'm confident oit wouldn't take much to organise an "on the road" or milling GTG

How much would you charge for one of your guys to deliver from the mill to clayton?

I would love to get some of those timbers but I dont think I could commit to the road trip. Maybe we can do a woodworkforum group buy - if there are members along the way we can do it in sections? Who's up for that?

    edit:
Spoke to Mathews Timber. Their prices are on the higher end so their Vic ash is out of my price bracket. Whelan the warehouse 42x115 hydrowood tassie oak (old growth) is cheaper then their 50x125 rough sawn vic ash even. Their white oak is 150mm wide so it means less timber needed, so getting 50x150 white oak at Mathews is reasonable but the smaller size (38x150) cost quite a bit more then elsewhere.

About $400 + gst, price would come down if it was combined with other loads going down

Just spoke to Powelltown sawmill - they also sell boards green. How long would one have to wait until it is try enough to use? 50x125 and 38x125

I'm sure there is a % that will be useless but if space is available it couldnt hurt to buy some green I suppose

Accepted wisdom for air drying is one year per 25 mm. So a 50 mm board would take 2 years.

    BUT
if it's stacked in your garage, it could be much longer as in a garage the boards won't get the air flow they would outside. But outside has it's own risks.

If you go down this route, buying 2 to 3 time the quantity you think you require would be a wise choice.
    regards from Alberta, Canada
