    Question

What area was the mine that this came from? It may help to know the location as this could be a species from the locale.

My first impression was pine but your description of hardness and density put that right outside that thought bubble.

Very much doubt it is Brush Box - I have never seen any BB like that.

    Yeah man, pbg regular here.
Artme, it's from a mine near Moranbah, a few hours west of Mackay. Yeah its a lot harder, denser and heavier than the bunnings pine I've used in the past, and smells different when planing, almost a cross between mushrooms and a freshly mown lawn, although VERY faint. Some of the slabs have the slightest amount of fiddle figure also, pretty interesting.

Having a look at qld wood species, it looks a bit similar to spotted gum also.

Or it was suggested that the colouration may be due to the minerals and coal dust staining the wood

@tcj, not major that I don't know what it is, but being for a guitar, if it sounds rubbish, I'll know to steer clear from it, or vice versa.

Completely understandable; you could always try getting it to thickness, giving it a tap and seeing if the resulting tone is pleasing to your ear. If it sounds dead you can always reject it. Or sell it as a jazz guitar

Or a bass haha. It's around 47mm thickness, the planed pieces are around 45 now. When tapped it's pretty bright, not maple bright but getting there, nicely resonant and a consistent the When tapped all the way through the board length.

Apart from the weight, which won't be an issue as it's getting extensively chambered, it seems to be a nice guitar wood. Just be nice to know what it is. I've got enough of it to make a run of about 8 instruments.

    Default PINE

    Hi Walkertone,

Your wood is definitely a pine. The reason is clear in your first image. The board at the bottom of the page shows needle trace (the regular fine dark spots down the core of the board). These are the scars of the pine needles that clothed the trunk of the upper portion of the tree. Check out the pine at your local hardware and you will find boards with needle trace. Any observations of smell as an indicator of species would be reasonable but for the fact that the timber has been down a coal mine for 30? years.

    Regards, Timboz
