Thanks mate. It's from the roof supports I'm underground mining, been down a shaft for the last 30 years. I spoke to a guy recently who said they use red oak now, but I'm not certain this is oak.

Then I'd say I am wrong and not a pine, unless cypress, but it doesn't look like that. I doubt red oak either.

Is it hard/soft, heavy/light or smell at all?

It's pretty hard, a lot harder than say bunnings pine. The pieces where you can see the center of the tree weigh a tonne, where the parts towards the outer are no heavier than a good mahogany. As far as smell, it just smells like coal haha. I know that's no help.

Here are some more pics. From what I've read about red oak it has open grains where this is pretty tight.

Thanks for your help though mate. In relation to the body blank, the board that's in the close up is the one on the right

No idea, looks a little brush-boxy maybe do what I do and call it tree wood.
If the guitars you make are for you it's really a non-issue unless it really bugs you, and if they're not you still have a cool story as to it's origin.
Saw this on the PBG forums as well while I was looking at builds.
