wood itentification
Hello Guys and Gals.
we have this wood and we are unsure what it could be. thought i would post it up here so we could all put our thoughts into it.
this was gifted to the cuemaker with unknown origin, (just to make it really hard)
physical characteristics, the wood is quite hard, i would give it an approximate janka hardness of around 2500-3000 about the same as ironbark, it doesnt seem too heavy for its hardness, and colours are mainly yellowis orange, with streaks of grean tinge.
it has a similar grain style of lignum vitae, but not as hardcore, but with its colours and grain style being similar, im thinking it could be related, but just a guess. it doesnt have the 3d effect when wet lignum vitae gives.
here is a scan of what it looks like. this is unfinished and dry, but sanded smooth.

Could be Canary wood or (unlikely) aromatic red cedar?
Cheers

i have not seen canary wood in the flesh, so that is a possibility, does it have greenish tinges in the grain, from the pics i can find it looks more orangish.
if anyone has questions feel free to ask, i have teh pce of wood here.
thanks

bubinga is red isnt it?, it doesnt have nearly enough colour to be bubinga. im thinking cypress pine is a possibility, 1500 janka hardness.
im trying to upload an image of the side grain.
cheers

By the colour, and if you reckon it smells like pine, my guess would be Goa Cypress - beautiful plumage!!!

Found out today what it is.
sure enough (gotta follow your nose) it is white cypress pine.
we have quite a bit of it some with figuring too, so should make for some nice cuemaking.
thanks for everyones input.
steve.
