    Question 235mm Saw Blade

    Hi,

I've been using a Makita 235mm saw in my Mk-3 since I first acquired the set-up from my late father.

The blade at the moment is an Irwin TCT 60tpi. The cut now has deteriorated to the extent that I should replace it. I'd decided that not many would bother with re-sharpening as likely the cost is more than for a new blade.

Okay, here is my query: should I replace it with a similar 60tpi blade or get a 40tpi one instead? I use the Triton mainly for furniture construction and the like.

When I inherited the Triton there was also a brand new TCT 100tpi blade. I've never used it assuming it was probably for metal. When I finally looked at it again it's some imported no-name unit and says it's for fine cutting. But doesn't say for cutting what. Does anyone think this blade is of any use in furniture construction? I mainly work with select Tas. Oak and 3mm and 6mm ply.

Your various opinions would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Ian

The more teeth the finer the cut. When I was using my Triton setup to make furniture I was using the Triton 80 teeth blade which gave a good finish but was not good for ripping.

Thanks for your quick reply Peter.

So would you think that I ought to replace the 60tpi with an 80tpi or just stay with the 60tpi but also get another 40tpi for ripping. Always found the 60tpi a bit slow when ripping, especially when tapering legs. I looked at Carbatec and Timbecon but they didn't have any 235mm blades with 80tpi.

What do you think about the unused 100tpi blade that I have? What's it good for?

Ideally you have the 40 for ripping, the 60 for general work and for the final nice cut with an 80.

However changing blades on your saw is not as simple as on my TS so I would get the 40 for ripping slightly oversize then use the 60 or 80 for the final cut taking only a small shaving to the fional size. ( Also helps to remove any burn marks )

As you have a 100 I would try that instead of an 80 and see how you go.

I had a Triton 100tpi blade in my Triton 9 1/4 saw that was in a 2000 WC. It gave a finish almost as good as a plane.

Great for cross cutting or working with melamine, not much good for ripping.

I'd use 2, 40 for ripping and 80 for other cuts (or try the 100) Just paln ahead with your cuts so you are not constantly swapping blades

Thanks to all who have replied - much appreciated.

Tried the 100tpi blade and got a fantastic result after I slowed down my feed rate. So I think I'll stay with that blade for the present but in the interim I've ordered a 40tpi for ripping.

    Cheers,

    Ian
