Thread: The Triton Letterbox Maker

I was always tempted to make a letterbox out of cast iron, then shrouding that in a timber veneer to disguise it. The next crowd that went through playing letterbox baseball would find themselves in for a rather painful experience.

This was while I was still living in NZ, and some younger people would consider driving past a letterbox in rural areas, and hitting them with a baseball bat at speeds up to 100km/hr entertainment.

Yeah, thats a great idea, when I bought my house the local louts stole the lot, letterbox and mounting post. Bought a new steel one from Bunnies, welded that to a suitable length of 50mm RHS then welded the lot to a railway wheel, dug a big hole in the sand down the front, lifted the u beaut letterbox onto the ute with the hiab and set it in two bags of quick set. It didn't move for years until I had a large limestone retaining wall built this year. The builders were dumbfounded when they could not budge it by hand and had to use their bobcat to pull, dig and tow it out of the ground to make way for the wall

Glad I was out mining and not at home, partner says there was much cussing.

Had a Triton for many years and never made a letterbox, must get the old MK3 out of storage to make one I suppose.

know how you all feel ,been working on my house for about 4 months and been putting my tools away religously every night. well about 3 days ago i must have left my 100mm bosch grinder out after cutting the roof back and went to use it a couple of days later and its nowere to be found ,remedy i bought a new one today,wishes that it does all things most foul to the ba@#$rd who has it now.

I've actually been asked to make a letterbox for my Niece & Nephew's cubby house, which will be done on the triton.

Perhaps you need to do something like this one.

Just had a thought about keeping the letterbox... I would love to replace the std aluminium one at my house with something a little nicer made out of wood. At least then when people walk past my house on a Saturday and I'm busy making noise in the carport they can see what I've been up to

if you made the post hollow, either by laminating bits together or routing a groove down the back and covering it, could you run a threaded rod down the centre into a concrete base and bolt it within the letterbox itself? Wouldn't help much for the morons who love breaking stuff but it should stop it getting pinched all together?

Just thinking out loud... what do you think?

I eventually found the letterbox in that thread. Now that's one they won't wreck or steal.
I do a bit of bike riding now and it's amazing how many wrecked letterboxes there are on the side of the road. It would look a bit strange if I picked one up to take home.
