If you have no luck locally, you can get the ½" collet assembly at http://www.toolsparesonline.com/prod...t-assy-12.aspx and the ¼" at http://www.toolsparesonline.com/prod...t-assy-14.aspx They do post to Australia and they also do collet assemblies in 6mm 8mm and 12mm if you have specialist needs for those cutter sizes. Timberbits are a Triton distributor and a forum sponsor. Give them a go. I found them great to deal with.

Plus 1 for timberbits. I've ordered a few triton spare parts through them, and they are always great to deal with. One of the few places left with real customer service.

Just remember if you want to use the new collets, you must also purchase the chuck body and remove the old one and fit the new one first. If you have a problem fitting this i can provide the instructions and I think that rayintheuk also has similar instructions on his website.

That is correct, the new collet and nut come as an assembly. However the new nut will not turn on to the old style chuck. The chuck body for the new style collets and nut is very different to the old style. I had to purchase the items separately. Looking at Tool spares Online they quote as separate items as well.

Just one piece of advice. Do not tighten the new style collet without a bit in it. You will deform it.

I know this is an old thread but I thought I may as well use it rather than starting another new one. I was just wondering how accurate the new style collets run compared to the original. I have the original on a TRA and the runout is 0.004" using the 1/4" adaptor. Do the new collets improve the accuracy, grip or both?
The photo that Les shows above obviously relates to some installation instructions. Where are those instructions located?
Thanks,
Dallas

I replaced both mine at about 18 months. Had a bit rise in the 1/4" and vibration problems with the 1/2". Thought it was the bits so I sent them back to the seller - APWORKSHOP (Carbitool distributor) to check. One T cutter was bad. They said to check the collet. Rest were fine so I replaced the collet. I really, really tighten both now (on their advice) so no rise problems BUT I have to undo and reseat the larger 1/2" bits sometimes to cure vibration problems so the 1/2" collets may still be questionable?

I prefer to use the supplied 1/4" collet assembly than a reducer.

In the early days of "domestic" (i.e., hobbyist) routers, in order to save costs they were often supplied with one large collet (usually ½", depending on country) and a reducing insert for the smaller popular size (again, usually ¼" with a ½" collet). Whilst this allowed some smaller bits to be used, but the much poorer grip achieved, using an insert, often led to a bit moving and a ruined workpiece or a disappointing routing experience.
Now that the "Hitachi-style" collet has almost disappeared in new routers, it's far easier to get dedicated collets for a variety of bit shaft sizes to fit the same router. There is no doubt that this is a far more secure and satisfying method of achieving the required grip on the cutter shaft and I cannot recommend the use of reducing inserts except as a last resort and then only if the insert slot is lined up with one of the collet slots.
