Cyclone mod. Not quite right.
Hi Everyone!.
After using the dust bucket for couple of months and being disappointed with it's performance, I decided to upgrade it to the cyclone mod. I have to say it was fairly easy and straight forward to do. However, I am getting a lot of dust in the vacuum. I would say around 50-60%.
I have followed the instructions step by step and final result looks very similar with the pic provided in the instructions. I am not sure where I went wrong. I have the 90deg pipe pointing towards the side of the bucket and have the straight pipe straight down to near the opening of the funnel and I have used filler to shape the ledge so there is continuous fall to the bottom. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

This could be your problem. If it's too close to the bottom of the funnel, it could be sucking up the dust before it gets through the funnel spout. I'd try shortening it a bit.
What might be worth your while is to find another pipe that'll slip over the centre one, so you can adjust the height to determine where it works best.
(This is just my guess, mind you. )

I think Skew is right. My centre pipe is only 250mm total when measured from the inside of the lid, so it stops a fair way short of the funnel.
Also, you say you have the elbow pointing at the wall. I hope you mean it's pointing along the wall, not at it.
Have you downloaded the video ? it might help.If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Yes. Just finished downloading the video. Excellent stuff.
I can see how the central pipe is a good 10-15cm shorter than where I had mine.
Does the suction power of the vacuum cleaner play an important role? (Hmm of course, silly question. Let me rephrase). I have a 1200w karcher, one of those small vacs from bunnings for $99. Is this powerful enough to create the proper cyclonic action?

The more power the better but I think 1200W should be OK. Just suck up a pile of shavings like I did in the video. You can see through the bucket, so if it's working, you should be able to see them flying around the wall.
The vac in the video is a Pullman AS3 from Godfreys and it's 1400WIf at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Can someone post a link to this mod. The link to the Aug 2005 triton newsletter is no longer on their website.
Thanks

It's in the Mods/Jigs section of the Triton Woodworkers site.

Thanks Skew/Gumby! Shortening the pipe and making the bog wall a bit steeper has made a huge difference. Time to make some saw dust!

Sturdee Dust Bucket Mod
I am another who has been inspired to modify my dust bucket into a cyclone but have made mine a little different and utilized ideas of others particularly Sturdee for the general design and Zenwood for the plastic cone.
I made my own cone from plastic sheet and fitted the cone using silicon after the Triton bucket and dust collector bucket lid were joined together using metal threads and mdf discs made to suit. The 40mm pipe joiners glued through the top have had other joiners connected and those joiners have been machined on a lathe at slow speed to increase the internal diameter to suit the vaccuum hose in the centre and the Triton hose on the outer.
It works a treat, thanks to Sturdee and Zenwood for the inspiration.
Regards from Adelaide
