Getting Started with Triton gear in Melbourne
I've just moved back to Australia to settle down here in Melbourne after quite a few years overseas and now finally can start buying some decent woodworking kit.
I want to build two beds (king & queen), a LCD TV cabinet (very wide) & and possibly an outdoor setting. Probably some sidetables as well - all modern designs or my own making. Having been to MatthewsTimber in Vermont, I think Red Gum is my wood of choice. With Pine or Vic Ash for the out-of-sight parts. I also found ABCO Timber is a stockist of Red Gum (from Bonum Sawmills), including their REDiboard (for larger surfaces). Any comments from experienced woodworkers would be most welcome !!!
I only have a two bedroom apartment at the moment, so not an awful lot of room. So I can go two ways:
- Utilise a workshop somewhere, like Holmesglen TAFE or otherwise (if possible)
- Convert one bedroom to a workshop with a decent tarp for a while (the missis shall just go wanting)
So does anyone know of a place with tools I can use on the weekend/evenings?
If the second option is my only choice, then I'm looking to buy:
- Triton Workcentre 2000 & 235mm Circular Saw
- Triton 82mm Planer & attachment kit
- Triton 2400w Router & Router Table (maybe - just for rounded edges)
- Triton Accessoires
- Is a simple dust mask sufficient for a bit of hobbying like this?
- A Corded Drill
- I'm looking for one that's going to last. Any ideas? Triton doesn't seem to have one... DeWalt instead?
- Can the hammering action on Hammer-Drills be turned on/off?
- Not sure I need the mixing feature, but the available power is nice.
Triton still seems to be all the go, even after GMC has taken them over. Correct me if I am wrong, but from reading the forums, unfortunately it looks like the Triton gear cannot be purchased from the Hills Clearance Centre nor from the Triton in Cheltenham anymore. I've noticed www.justtools.com.au in South Melbourne have better prices than Bunnings, but cannot find many other places with good prices. So where do I go for the best discount when buying >$1500 worth of gear?
