Problem with my GMC router!
Hi all,
"Problem with my GMC router" is not an uncommon statement, I know.
My GMC router will not progress beyond the slow start speed when I turn it on. I was using it for about 15 minutes on my router table, went to turn it back on and realised it was not speeding up after the slow start.
Any advice is welcome........I suspect the advice will be toss it out, but any assistance will be appreciated.
Regards, Anthony

I would open it up and check the brushes and if it is full of dust, if that is okay, then toss it out.

Thanks for the reply, have checked the brushes.
Robert,
Thanks for the reply.
I did pull the brushes out just in case there was a problem with them. They looked OK to me, to to be honest I wasn't exactly sure what I was looking for......they were shiny and not covered in dirt / gunk. As far as I can tell the internals of the router are not full of dust either.
It hasn't had a lot of work, just hanging off the router table. It is funny how it won't progress from the soft start. If it wasn't working at all it would be an easier decision to chuck it, but that may be its fate.
Thanks all the same Robert,
Anthony

Does the use you give it need the slower speeds? If not you should be able have the speed controller bypassed so that you have a viable single speed machine. Speed reduction is important once the bits you spin exceed about 20mm, but max speed is viable for bits up to that size.
Of course you also loose the soft start, but from memory the biggest router from GMC was 1500W or there abouts, and and my 1500W single speed Mak is quite managable at start up provided that you are aware that it will have a kick.
This is an option that saves the expense of replacing the unit and remouting the new unit in the table, but may not be totally suitable to your needs.

Not worth spending too much time/money on it - sounds like the speed controller has gone west to me. My baby Triton MOF001 is just starting to show the symptoms of this disease as well.....
GMC may be dead and gone, but Bunnings have thoughtfully provided a replacement range of similarly cheap crappy tools......in a range of colours !

I could try the speed control by-pass
Thanks for the suggestions fellas.
I have nothing to lose, so I will try the speed controller by-pass. Just 1 problem.....how do I do that?
