Mk3 & routing
Gday all and happy father's day to those to whom it applies. The rest of you, well...happy day.
A question: can a Mk3 workcentre be adapted as a router table? If so, what would I need to get/do to do this?
I bought a 2nd hand Mk3 workcentre, so don't have the benefit of all the manuals etc that might have come with it if I'd I bought it new...it's great to find an online place to get some hints & tips etc.Roly - Proud owner of 10 working fingers since 1972!

Hi Roly ,
I have a RTA300 Router Table (the new one) hooked up to an old MK3 I picked up on ebay for $40 . It does the job fine , & slips in the top like it was meant to be . If you go to this link on the Triton website - http://www.triton.com.au/product.php?id=20 it will tell you all about it .
Cheers ,

Have a look on ebay. There is an earlier router table there just now.
It's a matter of preference. The RTA300 fits a mk3 fine but I don't like the sliding table. The fence is wonderful however.
Another option is if you can find an early aja plate and your mk3 has the hole in the top you can mount a router under the standard top. The current aja plate won't do it as it's too high you need the cast one then rig your own fence.
Or you could just clamp a piece of thick mdf to the workcenter and bolt a router under it.

G"Day Roly
There are two versions of the table top on the Mark 3's. Mine has a hole for the router to poke through; my mate's does not have a router hole. Otherwise they seem identical.
You must have the right table top, otherwise you may as well buy a dedicated router table....... or make its creation your next project.
Cheers

Thanks for all your very helpful responses.
My workcentre's a bit old (serial no. is in the 200,000's) and does not include a router hole in the top.
I wasn't even aware that the RTA300 existed and am now suitably impressed...I'd be inclined to make my own router table if I had more room in my workshop (which also doubles as a single garage and triples as a brewery and in its spare time is also a laundry), but I reckon I might just aim for the RTA300.
This may, of course, take some time and lobbying to pass through the upper house, given the views of the Minister for War & Expenditure on the subject of "frivolous spending habits" (her words).
Thanks again!Roly - Proud owner of 10 working fingers since 1972!

You should be happy with the RTA300 on the MK3 , it works pretty well for me .
I was sneaky getting the OK for my RTA300 . I showed my wife pics of "All the wonderful things I could make her" , lol . Now I have the OK to get the big Triton Router . Only down side is , she has made a list of all the things I have to make . looks like I'll be busy for the next 10 years , lol .The best thing about being an Aquarian , is I never need to justify my insanity .

Hi Skot ,
No , that's the old type . The RTA300 has the sliding insert . I think it's better for me , for when it comes to routing , I need all the help I can , lol . Plus I can use the finger jointer with it , when I finally get one . She who thinks she should be obeyed , wants some boxes made , so I'm allowed to buy one .

I used to have a Mk111 with the old router table. When I got a 2000 I also got the new table with the sliding insert. I actually preferred the old one and kept the Mk11 as a dedicated router table with the old top. It was more accurate I thought and easier to route bigger stock. I found the sliding insert more trouble than it was worth. I know others feel differently but try them out if you can before you decide.

Went window shopping the other day and found a hardware shop that could order me an RTA300 (they had none in stock) for $220(!). I honestly didn't expect it to be that much, having looked at the price of some 2nd hand router tables on ebay. I figure I'll be keeping a close eye on the various online auction sites now. I was reluctant to do so, just in case there were parts missing etc, but I guess I can always download an RTA300 manual and check the online auction ads against that.
Meanwhile, I don't even have a router yet...my usual approach to these types of tool purchases (as far as the Fun Nazi is concerned) is to firstly get the peripheral items - like a router table - at a "bargain" price, then plead on the basis that they're useless unless I get something else - like a router.Roly - Proud owner of 10 working fingers since 1972!
