    Default new member router question

mornin all , got a brand spankin new triton 1400w router yesterday . was going to try to do some dovetail cuts on a cheepy jig i have . i have aligned the router up using the guide bush plate and the alignment bush . when i take the guide bush off , fit the router bit . then fit the 12mm guide bush i need for the jig . the bit is too WIDE to go through the guide bush . how do you fit it so it will be lower than the guide bush and work or plunge properly . i hope you understand this question . thats how it is listed ( very briefly in the instructions ) . i am very new to routing and i'm sure you think i'm simple because to you it's probly everyday run of the mill stuff . i hope someone will get it sorted for me so i can practise my dovetails and enjoy my router . many thanks one and all

I may have missed the point, but the router should be fixed in position and not set for plunge cutting. The router bit protrudes from the bottom of the jig and in my experience which is very limited on dovetail jigs, a normal dovetail bit will not pass through the jig bushing.Once you have set the depth it needs to remain in that position to give you the cut you need.

What John C said. Fit the guide bush then insert the bit from the outside (bottom) (the dove bit is tapered and should fit this way), set the depth of cut and lock it in. Adjust the depth slightly up or down after practising on scrap to achieve tight dovetails. Good luck and happy routing.
    Cheers,

thanks all , i can fit the bit ok , it's when i fit the guidebush the problem starts , the bit won't go through the 10mm width of the guidebush hole .it would be better if i could fit the bit after i fit the guide bush . but you can't . bit pushed for time now , i'll sort it later bye .

I think your jig is designed to take 1/4" shank bits or bits with a ball bearing collar on the bit itself - my Carbatec one is designed to use bits with the BB on the shaft.

If the bit that won't go thru the guide came with the jig, I can only suggest you were given the wrong bit. You will probably need to shell out for a 1/4" bit - IIRC the Triton comes with an adaptor sleeve which needs to be correctly oriented in the 1/2 holder - just make sure the thru' slots line up.

It's actually simpler than you think.

    1. Wind down the router till the shaft locks
    2. Insert the router bit into the template guide
    3. Fit the router bit into the router, and tighten
    4. Lock the template guide in position
    5. Use the microadjuster to set the final depth of the bit.
    6. Lock the plunge shaft lock.

The bit will always be protruding, so be careful. This is how you have to work with a lot of bits, where the diameter of the cutter is wider than the template.

Surprised you had to take off the plastic dust collector side - I've used the same setup, and hadn't been reduced to doing that. If it went together fine using those steps, simply reversing them should work (ie start by undoing the template guide, then plunge till the shaft locks .........
