Default TRA 001 Height Adjust Slipping

I have a TRA 001 mounted in a router table. To date I haven't bothered engaging the plunge lock lever because I'm sure I read somewhere that it's not necessary to do so. And indeed it hasn't proven necessary until today. I was template routing and the bearing dropped below the table, thus ruining the workpiece and template.

I could see the bit slowly descending when the router was running. Looking under the table I could see the micro winder slowly rotating. I've checked the manual and there doesn't seem to be a way of correcting this (other than using the plunge lock lever of course!).

I'm keen to hear from other TRA 001 users. Do you always use the plunge lock when table routing?

Personally I do, as an insurance against something happening like what happened to you.

I also have the TRA001 mounted in my table. Just as I would with a big industrial spindle moulder, I have always engaged the plunge lock before cutting material. The micro winder adjustment winding due to the vibration of the machine when cutting has been discussed on these forums in the past. A simple solution is to set you router bit height, engage the plunge lock lever, then turn the micro winder 'up' 1/16 or 1/32 of a revolution to put the winder bolt threads under tension.

Here's my MOF001 in action. I always lock the plunge mechanism.

Does your router vibrate when this happens?

The extent of the wind down on mine depends on the extent of vibration - some of my bits vibrate more than others and I've had the worst ones checked by a Carbitool supplier and they reckon their O/K.
Bought new collet assemblies and the vibration is a lot less - pretty poor for an 18 month old machine.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Lappa,
My height adjuster was moving exaxctly like yours in the video, but a little faster. I didn't notice any undue vibration. My router is about the same age as yours, but has had very little use. It's practically brand new.

I'll get into the habit of locking the plunge lock.

Excuse me asking, but I presume you have the plunge spring removed?

I had a similar issue and always lock it now.

I found some subtle wear on the main plastic winding wheel teeth, which i replaced. It now works fine, but I still lock it just in case.
I have taken my TRA apart a few times, and I am suprised at the amount of mdf dust clogging some of the internals - cleaning that helps too.

Further to Chrism3, it pays to remove the knob that contains the big lifter spring. It is not needed and fills with dust. I was advised somewhere to remove this to allow dust to be blown from inside the motor.

Next, remove the small black winder handle knob. Its a single screw and pops off. It completely fills with dust and compacts. My TRA was also doing the rotating thing, but solved it by removing the knob. It is unused anyway.

My spring holder knob is off, I had the black winder handle off and no dust. I make all my minor adjustments using that winder knob. I very rarely use the winder handle any more.
