TRA-001 height issue with large bits - the bit won't hold the height steady
Hey mates!
I am relatively new to routing so this may be a noob question...
I have the TRA-001 mounted into the RTA-200. When using a heavy flush trim bit (1/2" diameter) the router won't hold the bit height setting. I am using the through table height adjustment and I can literally see how the handle moves even when the router is running idle.
The spring has been removed, and with smaller/lighter bits it works fine. Any ideas what can be the issue?
Thanks!
Edward

Hi,
Are you using the lock leaver? It will definitely move if you do not lock it.

It should not be loose, Some thing must have come loose or fallen out, I can not be much help without being able to look at it.

Hi,
Good. Thanks for the report, so many come on here asking some thing and never come back to tell us if they have got it solved or given up in disgust.
RegardsHugh

You took the router plunge spring out, had issues, put the plunge spring back, investigated further and found and rectified an issue with the lock unit.
But, is the router plunge spring in or out at present? It should be out for under table use, and one of the better design aspects of the Tritons is the fact that the spring can be removed/replaced easily. One of the poorer aspects is the ease with which the height adjust mechanism can be damaged by leaving the spring in place (at least in the earlier models) while the machine is inverted under the table.
Did the lock mechanism work properly before you removed the plunge spring? In theory, there should be no need to interfere with the lock system to remove or replace the plunge spring.I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

You are a 100% right, and I do wonder how that leaver got loose.
I've put the spring back in to "restore it to the original state" just to check it works OK in a hand-held mode. After all, I am an IT guy, hence the approach .
Now the spring is out, the leaver works perfect. It was the guidance where to seek for the problem that I was missing, as I never knew I had to lock the height while it's in the table.

Unfortunately the Tritons have too much vibration in them which makes the height winder mechanism slowly unwind if not locked. It would be great if you didn't have to lock them as everything could then be done from above except the fast travel using the height adjuster handle.
Don't you hate it when you do something and something else totally unrelated happens. Glad you were able to track it down with a couple of thought prompters.Dallas

Well, there are no ideal things, and after all, one has to learn how to use the tools... I agree it could be a bit more "user-friendly", but it ain't no rocket science either, right?
So cheers to the guys who kicked me into the right direction, now I am one bit smarter
