Triton Router - lights are on but nobody's home
Hi everyone
My triton router won't start. The switch goes red, i.e has power to it but the router just won't make a turn. Has anyone else experienced this?
It worked fine last time I had it on - probably 6 months ago. It is relatively new having done very little work.

Some have reported dust in the switch. The following is an extract from our website, posted by Stuart Lees when he had a similar problem:
Have had more problems with the router switch - finally conceeded and took it completely apart. The contacts were caked in MDF dust so deep it was lifting the ball bearings away from the surface, preventing the switch from working.
I tried a few options:
1. Replacing the switch - got one from Dick Smith for $5 which works, but as it was not identical (they normally do have them, just not the day I was looking), it caused some problem with the switch lock (that prevents you turning on the router when it is fully plunged to change the bit.
2. Cleaning the existing switch. Getting it apart was ok, not the easiest. Putting it back together was an absolute bastard. Not recommended! But it did work.
3. Contacted GMC, and convinced them that it was a warranty defect (despite being over 3 years old) as it was a design flaw. Simon is excellent in their customer service, and agreed with me - and a new switch unit, which includes the latest mods for duct exclusion arrived by post today.
Hopefully this will be the end of my problem with the switch, as I have already had it serviced once for the same problem (again under warranty). Goes to show that MDF is a right prick to work with. Gets in everywhere, so make sure you use GOOD respiration protection. If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Hi Gumby & Stuart
I rang Triton / GMC but with no joy. They said to take it to a service centre and have it repaired.
Do you have any tips of getting a replacement switch for my quite new but out of of warranty router?
I would rather spend the hard earned on timber than repairs particularly when it is obviously a design fault. Any help from those known to Triton would be great.
Regards
Ash

So: Choose any one of the following:
1. Look at the parts list on the Router, find the switch unit, and just order it from TMC. (GMC/Triton). Its a simple matter of swapping the two over. Cost- around $20.
2. Contact GMC and try to get Simon specifically - he's great. It is a known fault with the Triton router- a design fault, and it really shouldn't be a warranty issue.
3. Go to Dick Smith and buy a replacement switch. Cost $5. (I did this initially just to get the router working again). The only thing you might find is you can't get a switch with the light (well they didn't have any in stock when I was looking, but they do have it in the catalogue). Little bit more fiddly, but still really easy.
4. Take the current switch apart and clean all the crap off the contacts. That part isn't too bad. Getting it back together is a right pr*ck. I managed, but would not wish it on anyone.
5. Send the switch to me (just unscrew the orange bit off the side of the router and disconnect the contacts- just make sure you know what goes where! don't bother removing the switch from the housing), and I'll do GMCs job and fix it for you myself. It'll cost you $5 for for me to pick up a Dick Smith switch, plus a couple of bucks for postage.
Hope one of these solves your problem."Clear, Ease Springs"

Hi Stuart
I'll give Simon a call and see what he can do. Failing that I may take you up on your very kind offer.

Hi Ashley & Stuart,
Not 100% sure as I don't have the Triton router, but I have been known to incorporate the DSE switch with dust boot into devices.
Perhaps the following may be useful, it is a fairly standard item, any store should have heaps of them.

The only one my DSE store had at the time was the non-illuminated, but it was only temporary stock shortage, and I couldn't be bothered shopping around. From a safety aspect, I would strongly recommend the illuminated version- is a great final visual clue to whether the router is being supplied power.
Oh, and for obvious reasons, the dust cover is paramount!"Clear, Ease Springs"

Hey fellas
I went to our new DSE store but no switches. I guess all the stores can't stock all the products.
I then rang Triton and got a young fella who said he would send me a new switch for nicks. It hasn't arrived yet but here's hoping.
Simon now works at night - something about taking calls from the U.S. so if you want to get hold of him I guess you need to ring after 11:00pm.
Thanks for your help. I hope to be routed again very soon.

Hey guys
A quick update. I received the new switch in the mail and wacked it in. I managed to get a bit of shed time at the weekend and knocked up a sample raised panel door for a mate of mine. The router worked a treat.
Thanks for all your help.
