Default TRITON RTA300 ROUTER TABLE - Questions

I am a bit disappointed with my old Triton router table. It is the original one for the MK3 (new series?). The height adjustment was always a bit of a pain, along with the bit of flex on the table top.

So I am thinking of updating to the new RTA300. With any luck I can get one at the wood working show in Syd.

They must be OK as they are as scarce as rocking horse Pxx to buy secondhand.

I have the big yellow triton router to compliment it should I go with the new top.

    So a couple of questions:
Are there any problems with flex on the top like the old ones have?
The height adjustment, is through the top correct?
Is there any difficulty with the height adjustment to the router connection? eg Does the winder handle go into the router and work the router winder mechanism?
Is the sliding table part adjustable for a smooth run.

Or should I look at other options/tables? Carbatec etc.

    Thanks in advance.

    Lyle.

    Hi there,

Are there any problems with flex on the top like the old ones have? I have had mine for over a year now with a TRA 001 mounted and no flex at all.

The height adjustment, is through the top correct? Mine is underneath and is really easy as access isnt really limited by anything. You can install the top mount winder with the TGA150 accessory pack but the TRA001 doesnt have that option. Only the MOF001 accepts above table height adjustment

Is the sliding table part adjustable for a smooth run.. I removed mine and replaced it with a mdf board as i didnt use it, but yes mine slid smooth. Its no ball bearing operation but yeah doesnt get stuck

Or should I look at other options/tables? Carbatec etc. Given that i see them come up for sale quiet cheap from time to time id hang around to get one. For example i think Glenrob is giving away one at the moment in Woodworking general forum (i think)

    Hope that helps,
    delbs

I had the new Triton router table and sold it to buy the Carbatec router table(solid table not the sliding table one)
The reason I changed over was the Triton still had some flex and it did not have a slot for a sliding mitre gauge as my TS.And the table was a bit on the small side
This Carbatec unit needed some tune ups to get the fence straight and I drilled extra holes so I could change the position of the hold downs to a bit better position(IMO) but it has a good dust system,I have an early 1/2 inch Triton mounted all the time, under the table height adjustment no problems and of course the above table bit change means that you never have to lift the heavy table up as you would need to with other routers.

Thans for the replies so far. Much appreciated.
Thanks delbs, saw the give away. I might contact them to see what table it is. The RTA or like my old original.

nrb. How is the height adjustment done on the carbatec table? Do you lift the table then use the router adjustment? Or is there a mechanism that lifts the router? Same for bit change, do you lift table, then raise router bit and undo?
Is it possible to do freehand routing on this table eg curves using a bearing guide bit? Do you just remove the fence?
I am looking at the sliding table type and was wondering about pro-cons on it.

    Always with the questions

I owned the Carbatech sliding table also but the 2 bit things that made me move it on were

    1. I had to lift up the whole table each time just to re-adjust the bit height which i did ALOT when using my Gifkins dovetail jig. every few minutes or so i change the bit and re-adjust the height so just because too tedious for me.

    2. was that the sliding portion of the table didnt sit level to the actual table where the bit lived so i would have needed to install shims undernearth the guide rails to ensure i had a flat square cutting surface.

That being said i am currently building my own router table because there are features i want that neither table have. So depending on how soon you want one my RTA300 will be up on here for sale soon. Just depends to when i can finish my current build

    HI lyle
With the Triton routers you change the height from under the table,as to the bit change with the Triton you bring the router up and change the bit from the top.
With others I guess you need to tilt it up and change from there,I have no experience.
Can you do freehand with bearing bits -yes,you can take off the fence system to give you the whole table if need.
The table is heavy to lift but not a issue for me as I use the Triton.

    Thanks.
So it seems I am now going to seriously look at the carbatec solid table.
Carba-Tec® Cast Iron Top Router Table : CARBA-TEC

Stick a wheel kit to it for moving around the shed.

Lyle,if you screw some 50mm square timber between the legs and then put some casters on the bottom you will be able to move it where you want.
The plastic 50 kg ones with locks on are the one use, this gives you a total of 200 kg,they are quite strong enough,I have these on my table saw as well which is much more heavier,at around $6 a pair it's a good thing instead of paying hundreds more.
I did this after I put together my RS and router stand =a harder job,do it while you are putting it together.
    Good luck
