Triton thicknesser
Ever tried to buy a Triton thicknesser off the shelf? I did see one at the WWW show but as for Bunnings, Gasweld... no one's even got one to look at.
What is your experience? Does Triton not want to sell them?

Available via Special Order only. Same is true for pretty much all the new Triton tools.
I'm not sure how successful this method of selling is going to be - time will tell.Last edited by Stuart; 2nd August 2007 at 03:24 PM.

Yeah I like to see what I am buying, buying from a pamphlet is not the same.

opinion re selling
Stu,
I do not think we need to have half a brain to guess your opinion and concur with it.
What are the thicknessers like? Any feedback? Dean doesn't seem to have used his yet.CJ

I've been using a 13" at the Holmesglen course - use it to flatten the students' breadboards after the glueup on the second day.
As far as that doesn't push the machine, it works as you'd want. Height adjustment is easy - good large handle. Has a height lock which may be good for some chores. Also, haven't used the dust bag, but the active system used to get the chips out of the machine is effective - coupled up with a decent system (2 - 4" dust collection), it would be good as you'd want.
Blades are specific to the machine. Much thinner than I would expect, but very easy to change in and out, and the way they've done it means that the real fiddly alignment of the blades is taken care of for you. Wish there were more blades....
Would be really keen to try the 15"! Especially with the moulding blades.
Not going to give a final verdict - what I'd say is try to get to actually see one in use, and form your own opinion, based on your requirements. If you (anyone) has any specific questions about aspects of the machine, ask and I'll see if I can give a more targetted answer."Clear, Ease Springs"

Will tomorrow.
And fwiw, if you look in any Bunnings store in the tool shop, you will find a new brochure for special orders that details all the new Triton tools, and their prices."Clear, Ease Springs"

13" is $699.
For my money however, if I was convinced to get the Triton, I'd definitely spend the extra $300, and get the 15" for $999.
I have here (as of yesterday) full sized images of the moulding blades that are available. The largest is something like 50mm across, and it would be a brave man (or woman) who would run the equivalent profile in a router table.
And you get an extra 2".....for only $300..."Clear, Ease Springs"

Just saw the Jet 13" at Major WW in Sydney - looks like a nice unit. Anyone who's seen/used the two have a comment? Oh, of course the Jet is $800 not $700 .

I have been looking for a portable thicknesser for quite a while and nearly ordered a triton 13 inch BUT ! I was looking at the carbatec site and there 13 inch planer with digital read out (cv8412) is on special for $669 normally $900.
Its the same as the triton 13 inch but also has 2 speeds and digital height read out.
I have ordered one and have been impatiently waiting for 2+ weeks already for delivery.
The shed is humming with anticipation.
