    Toss up between my 1974 Record 4 smoother; because for many years that's all I had and I learned about 99% of my planing skills on it; or my 1911 Stanley 5 that I restored as a user a couple of years ago.

    Hmmm; I guess I'd have to plump for the 5.

    I was actually wondering this exact question when I was leveling my laminated pine work bench. My go to is the no.6 stanley beautiful old tool. Made in Canada. I did use the veritas low angle jack plane at the Wood work expo and it was fanastic. The blade thickness was impressive. The weight, casting quality was nice. Thats my next purchase I think.

    Stanley 5 1/2. Hands down. It's the bench plane I use most.
