2 inch chisel handle diameter - EA Berg
Looking to make a handle for a 2 inch berg socket chisel that i bought from Sapling.
I made one which was a bit too small in diameter.
Could someone that has one please measure the diameter and /or please take a photo on graph paper for a starting point.
I have seen this thread and tried to work out from DC's hand without much luck.

This shows the original handle with rulers. The width of the handle at its widest is 45.3mm on the calipers. This is not a socket chisel of course, but the handle sizes may not be that different

If it helps size from the photo, my palm is 10cm/4" across.

Peter, are you sure you didn't mis-read your calipers?? From the inch scale you've included, I'd judge the diameter to be a good deal less than 45mm (almost 1 3/4"), and more like 32-33mm (a bit over 1 1 /4"), which is the aproximate diameters of all of the Bergs I have. However, the largest of mine has a 1 1/4" blade, so if they used larger handles on larger sizes, my measurements aren't valid.
I do think, though, that most people with average-sized hands would find 45mm handles a bit hard to wrap the pinkies around. I find even 35mm uncomfortably obese, and am much happier with 32-33 (amazing how much difference a few mm makes!). Of course there may be a few out there with super-sized paws that would find 45mm 'just right'.....

Hi Ian
The handle for the 2" is a BIG muvver! It is possibly 1 1/2 times the diameter of the standard Berg handles.
That is the chisel I sold. As I noted above, my palm is 4"/100mm across.

Indeed I did Ian, old eyes and incipient dementia contributing no doubt. The handle at its widest is 40.5mm. This handle is big for me, and I have largish hands - a bit bigger than Derek's from his photo.

Ok, Peter - happier now. Forty mm is still larger than it looks to me in the pic with the rulers, but it's hard to line up the graduations accurately (well, for me, anyway), so I'll accept your amended reading.
Yairs, it IS a big muvver of a handle! Much larger both in length & girth than handles on its little brothers & sisters, for sure. I can't grasp the logic in sticking big, fat, handles on larger sized chisels, apart from maintaining some sort of consistent proportions. If the diameters of the narrower chisel handles have been worked out on the basis of what fits in an 'average hand', then are these whoppers intended to be used only by giants?
A lot of manufacturers followed the same pattern, so there must be a reason there somewhere that I'm missing.........
Cheers,IW

For those that are interested in the comparison this is a 1 1/2 (38mm) chisel handle. It is 35mm in diameter. Grid paper is 5mm squares.

Hi everyone,
I know I haven't been around to save the day for a while; but here are my (awesomely definitive) two cents.

Thanks Dane.
As part of a swap with IanW I was lucky enough to have a handle made by him.
