    Default The #6 has landed

Here's the Stanley type 13 #6 (1925-1928) I've just finished restoring to user standard for the challenge. The tote feels a little small and the knob has come off a later model because there is the impression of modern casting around its base, but otherwise it all seems original. This is the first US Stanley I've restored and the oldest, but the most pleasant to do. The steel seems a bit softer, the machining a bit better so the sole and frog lapping was faster.
I hollow ground the primary bevel on the iron to 28º (I didn't have the patience to push on to 30º after all the grinding to get past the pitting) and honed the secondary bevel to 32º and gave the back a microbevel using the ruler trick of David Charlesworth. As usual for me, I honed a very slight camber on the iron which makes it easier to square up an edge. I just use 1200 and 4000 waterstones. It's quite a nice user but would be even better with a Paul Williams blade. Should be a good user for someone (with little hands)

    Cheers
    Michael
