The #7 gets a soul
Scraping my #7's sole began today. It's a wartime US Stanley and quite a bit concave and not useable. I started filing away the ends this afternoon with a square second cut file and then switched to a carbide scraper, the scraper was much faster anyway. I have a few more runs to do but the ends are getting a good pattern. This is the first I've done for a while but got in the Zen groove pretty quick. The plane is held in a B and D workmate which I made a new top with replaceable soft jaws and leather lined, holds tremendously well and the black plastic bag keeps the filings contained. I started filing off the ends even before spotting after finding that the plane was hinging at the ends (riding right on the ends) I should be ready before long Ian for that #7 shootout!

I'll sharpen 'er up & stand by, Michael.
If nothing else we should get a few boards nicely edged......

It's my cunning plan to have a bunch of timber for Shoji doors dressed
I finished the scraping today to a standard that is good enough for a hand plane. I have good planarity across the toe, around the mouth and heel and a very very slight depression that doesn't blue after the mouth (less than 0.001"). Here's some photos of the finished job showing the blueing pattern. It wouldn't be yet up to machinery standard but you have to understand the granite surface plate that made those spots is flat to plus/minus 1.2 micron! It took 7 carbide scraper edges to reach this stage ( I have 2 carbide inserts each with 4 cutting edges). Time to resharpen them fresh for the next job.
There's a video too at Pin on Pins by you
