Where do I get an adze handle from
Hello Forumites,
A mate at Hepburn has an old adze. His offsider, (young Hercules), broke the handle last weekend. Does anyone know where to source a adze handle? It's an odd thing, the handle end is configured like an axe handle, and the head end is tapered like a pick handle, but is rectangular in section, instead of oval.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers, Redbog

I was surprised to see them ....BUT.... I bought one a few weeks ago, and a little work with a spoke shave had it going again in quick order.
Cheers,
Peter

Yeah ?? Its funny how the stores can be so different from each other but look the same inside.
Ive got two Bunnings stores within 2 kilometers, another about 4 kilometers away and then a Masters opens up within a kilometer. And they all have such a different vibe about them.
Not for much longer Pete, as you know I'm moving . I think the closest will be 80 K away . What will I do
What a strange thing for them to carry though , Adze handles !! Redbog here and Matty are the only people Ive heard ask for them and that's within a woodworking community . How long are the adze handles going to sit there in Rosebud?

There is a bloke who goes to the Yandina Qld markets each Saturday morning and he has wood handles for just about everything. If you know someone who lives from Brisbane to Gympie get them to go and check them out. They would have to be one of the best markets I have seen. No Crap stalls. You won't go to Emundi markets again.

If you don't have any luck with the online stores, I hope your mate was smart and he kept the broken bits. Glue them back together and use them for a template to saw out a new handle. You will need a larger piece of generic hardwood (not Meranti - ptooey) then trace out the handle trying to get the grain to flow along the handle - the area from the head end to mid shaft is more important. Saw out the flat rough shape, preferably on a band saw, then saw out the taper in the other axis. You can get suitable power router bits that will do the roundovers where required, then get to it with some sandpaper to blend everything in.
Take Hercules and sit him down in front of a video showing how to use an adze - Roy Underhill has several shows where he goes into great detail - and emphasize sharp tool, gentle controlled swinging. If it wasn't for OH&S I's suggest making him do his adzing bare foot.

Just came back from the Hastings VIC bunnings store, and I stopped counting at nine(9) Adze handles. So they appear to be around if you look hard enough.

I just spent two hours with a draw knife and spokes shave and made a curved short handle shovel handle and a wood splitter handle. It is not hard.
I am learning, slowley.
