Default AHREMS plane blade, unusual? or not?!

Hi guys, looking through an old toolbox of mine, i rediscovered an old plane blade that my stepfather gave me 15 years ago, and that's where it sat since!, but since discovering this forum and the awsome project ideas it has given me, (just today i made up an electrolysis kit and have a USA stanley 5 1/2 plane getting some treatment, can you believe it was a garden ornament?)
i decided to search for the brand name Ahrems, but only came up with some carpenters pincers and not much else, so my question, is this a decent iron? i see it is German made, 51mm across, tapered, 4mm at the business end, 2mm at the mushroomed end, and 190mm long. I'm thinking i have a blade to make a hand plane! What do you think!

    We need photo

It could be a single-blade solid iron, or have the slot and round cut out of the middle for a cap-iron.

It could have come from a european-style horned plane or an english type plane.

Tool Exchange shows this one described as "#6322 Wood Smoothing Plane cutter Ahrem's Goodline, small check in front otherwise clean plane."

I don't know ... but that looks english to me ... usually Sheffield. It might be mentioning "German Steel" ?

I assume it is a taper iron in that it starts at 2mm at the top, thickens to the 4mm point, then there is the bevel back to a point?

    Cheers,
    Paul

    From a Google Groups entry:
"A good friend of mine gave me a Ahrems Good Line plane. It has thefollowing markings on the plane:
    4 S H H and also 2 1/2 and the name Ahrem's Good Line Germany. The
plane is about 15 inches long. The plane iron has a cap iron and it
has the following markings on it. TIP with a marking that looks like a
heart next to it. There is also below it a name "H CROOKES & Co,
    SHEFFIELD"
I would appreciate any info that I can get on this plane.
Collecting old planes is a hooby of mine besides woodworking for which
sadly I don't have much time lately.

    Kind regards GeorgeSA"

    Nothing wrong with that iron

Out of 13 woodies (other than horned planes) only 2 have a single iron - a 4" toy plane and a french user-made jack plane.

But if you look at the horned planes Peter Lightwood was selling in the link above you can see that they all(?) have a single iron - that is ... no cap iron.

So maybe a jack plane rather than a smoother? But whatever you like really

    Cheers,
    Paul

I think - looking at the coffin smoother above - that there is a cap-iron on that blade, and the wedge looks like it is sitting ridiculously high up the mouth as a result. (If I'm reading the picture correctly)

Here is that jack plane .. and a jointer that also breaks the rules on choice of timber.
    Both user-made.
    Both French.
    Both very old.
    Both perfectly useable.

    woodies 011.jpg

The jack looks like it is from almost a burl, and the jointer was made from a small tree - heartwood right down the centre!
    Necessity I guess.

Jack - front side - bottom - toe

Jointer - side view - toe - heel - sole
