    Default Aldi surprise

Bil gave me this Aldi plane, probably as a joke because he is a cabinet maker and should know tools.
I expected this to be a disaster.
Opened the box, set the blade and took to some rough sawn maple. Very surprising result, kept backing the blade off and got whispy shavings, 3 sides done in about 5 minutes.

Here is a thread from a little while ago - https://www.woodworkforums.com/f152/p...-plane-119564/

Seems to be mixed thoughts on it.

I got one when the first call went out and was plesently surpresed also. If they have them on again I will get another couple as the blades are worth the money by themselves. I think someone said they drop right into a No 5.

My fettled one is going just fine. Of course, if I count the considerable time spent fettling, it wasn't quite such a bargain as it seemed.....

Nothing wrong with the blade, and I made up a new wedge from a scrap of beech to grip it properly.

I bought one of these and they are terrific value for money. $14.95. I don't see how anyone could complain about them and to compare them to an expensive plane is grossly unfair as some guys/gals have done. Usually you get what you pay for and in this case, I think those that bought them got more than they paid for. It was a good buy. We are all too quick to complain and condemn some of the larger companies when they do something wrong so how about we remark positively when they do something right. The Aldi plane is a good product for the money.
    Reality is no background music.
    Cheers John

I agree - I've ended up with a perfectly useable plane, and the blade is actually of better quality than the current Record production !

These Aldi planes would be great for someone just starting out who needs to learn about plane fettling, or to get some idea about making their own wooden planes. At the price, it isn't a total disaster if you stuff it up. There's nothing wrong with them that can't be fixed/improved.
