answer me this
why are old (60 yr plus) and brass hinge leaves tapered. I haven't had to do very many in my career as a carpenter but I now have 40 brass hinges to fit to windows and although I can router the thin end I'm having to use my marking gauge to mark the thick end and hand chisel the taper. The worst part is I have to chisel the whole hinge into the frame as it is rebated and I can't get the router to fit. The timber is blackwood, to be polished, so no margin for error. The only upside is I'm getting to use the fantastic chisels from thumbsucker's group buy. 4 hinges (8 gains) then a quick strop and ready to go again.
Don't force it, use a bigger hammer.
Timber is what you use. Wood is what you burn.

Hi,
Quality brass hinges of the period were probably cast rather than extruded or stamped from sheet.
Much easier to remove tapered and rounded items from moulds than flat and square in my limited (non-metal) moulding experience.

thanks for the reply hiroller, it make sense for the old hinges and I suppose the new brass are only copying the design as I thought with modern methods they would be machined not cast.
