Actually the "new" 400 was on one of the pegs destined for restoration and resale. Now it's not on the peg, it's not for resale and at some time in the near or distant future it will be restored.

Absolutely Matt. It's not for sale unless you offered $1000.
Just on this hybrid aspect, how about if I cobbled up a hybrid using a Disston saw plate, Atkins perfection handle and a Simonds dollar medallion. How much would that be worth? )

On reflection, to comply with IanW's suggestion, I would have to cross an American saw with something from Europe (Sandvik?) or the UK (Spear and Jackson etc) and then a second cross with something Indian to get the full benefit of hybrid vigour. Did they make Bos Indicus saws?

I am warming to this hybrid theme. Perhaps a perfection handle from the Atkins stable (maybe a 400) , an elephant brand Spear and Jackson or alternatively a kangaroo brand from Rob't Sorby for the saw plate and a Bos Indicus medallion (would have to be specially cast) giving the three levels of hybrid vigour. I would call it the "Moreau" after H G Wells' island creatures.
If only the saws could breed or is that how we end up with panel saws and this saw:

Hello Paul,
thank you for starting another great topic, yes I too am not sure how or why Atkins whacked such a heavy price tag upon their 400 saws, I wonder how many were sold?
I've been searching through a few catalogues around the same era and came across 1918 Disstons D115 @ $36 per doz. 1910 Simonds # 4 @ $32 per doz. 1906 & 1919 Atkins 400 @ $48 per doz. 1915 S & J #171 @ $35.65 per doz.
but, you could add a brass heal plate to a genuine rosewood handle bringing the price up to $47.75 per doz. just 25 cents below the 400.
I used a historic currency converter to figure out the different monetary values, so am relying on them to be correct.
So the S & J # 171 may be the close contender that you were asking for, they claim that ' it is actually the finest saw produced '
I've attached the catalogue picture for you to see if I've read it properly.
Graham.
