    Default My bad Bye

I had lost 2 split bolts & nuts to one of my Diston hand saws so I decided to drop into City of Stirling Recycle depo at Balcatta to see if I could find a old saw that I could strip the bots from. As I scrounged through a multitude of bits and pieces I came across a hand saw which appeared to be pre war vintage. No buckles, a little rusty in places, appears to be hardly used although who ever has sharpened it, they do not know the art of sharpening a saw.
The saw had lost the makers tag that is on one of the split bolts so I could not identify the maker, in all appearances to me it was a pre war Diston. It cost me $3.00.
When I arrived home and after removing all the rust I was unable to find the Diston acid etched trade mark on the blade. When i compared the handle with a old Spear & Jackson saw it was an exact match.
There goes my thoughts of picking up a collectors item Diston saw for pee nuts. Now should I take the saw back and as for my money back?
    Regards
    Mac

Nothing wrong with old Spear and Jackson saws.
You have a bargain no matter the brand.
I'd say it was your lucky day.

What SG said. You can't buy a single saw nut for $3. Yep, bargain. Well done.

And that is what I thought, actually this was the second time I have picked up a hand saw. Previous about 18 months ago I picked up a Diston 7 pointer in excellent condition but with 1 nut missing from the same source, the cost $2.00

Talk about co incidence then. This very day, I have returned from the recycle center with a Disston 7 pointer.

Mine was 2 dollars along with some other bits and pieces.

It still has all its bolts and nuts, but the handle, one with a inlet carved branch pattern has been in the weather.

Its a Disston for sure as it has the coin like badge in the handle and the etched name into the blade.

    Cheers

Hand saws are the orphans of the second hand tool market.
While hand planes and chisels seem to fetch good prices - stratospheric prices sometimes - the humble handsaw often attracts little attention.
There have been some absolute bargains go begging for a new home over the last couple of years. Most went cheap and those that didn't sell must have gone to landfill.
It is such a shame, as many of these were quality tools in need of a little TLC.
Anyhoo - plenty of bargains to be had in this area.
    You can get lucky sometimes.

I've noticed that too - handsaws are stupidly cheap. I picked up a pair of Canadian Disstons, probably 50's vintage, in need of some fairly minor TLC for $10 each.

I would be stoked to find an old Spear and Jackson for $3...

That bad bye turned out even better than I first thought, I have sharpened it and given it a further clean down and a good rub with fine wet and dry.
Behold up comes a acid etched trade mark in the centre of the blade and clear as anything the Henry Disson Logo. The blade is about 50mm shorter than my existing 7 pointer Disson as well as the handle is slightly different, in fact the handle matches a Spear and Jackson saw I have, the screw heads are smaller than my Disson as well there is only 4 screws where as mine original saw has 5.. The handle is made from a light redish timber, very dense .
All up I am very pleased with myself.

    Hi Mac,

Ripper!! Who's a happy chappy then? Good score indeed, particularly the logo in good condition.

Actually I have found a similar thing at the flee markets some years ago. A really horrible handle, with a Spear and Jackson button, on a Disston blade, but the saw was all bent out of shape, real shame.

    Cheers
