Beaver wood chisels
Hi all
I am not into hand tools much. Today at a flea market, I found this set of Beaver woodworking chisels. The guy was wanting $50.00 Canadian. The sale will be on again tomorrow. I do not know if this is a good price or not. I am hoping someone here can tell me the value. Thanks

If they are Sweedish steel then $50 is OK. I dont know of beaver brand (or any Canadian brands for that matter) but they look like bergs and they are a great chisel.

Beaver are Bergs but made for the Canadian market. Can't be specific, but I read it somewhere about the history of Berg chisels.

buy buy buy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For $50 that is a bargain you're unlikely to find again. Buy 'em before he finds out how much he could sell them for.
cheers

Thanks John, Frank, SG, and Waldo
My sister was at the sale today and the guy still had the chisels so she got them for me. I may see her next weekend to get them.

That's a real bargain. Rarely see Bergs at that price...

Thanks Poppa and Avery
I wouldn't know what they were worth until I asked in the forum so the guy selling them was the same as me I suspect.
That is a nice set you showed Avery. Wonder if the person sold them?
I also sent for a set of 10 narex classic bevel edge chisels from lee valley.
The set of seven came today. Now I understand I have to sharpen and I just don't want to put out another 200.00 dollars for waterstones and stone lapper so was wondering if sandpaper to 800 grit would be enough as I will only buy a stone every month or so.

Hi Byc, you want to hope your sister is not reading this thread. Could be a hefty buyers commission!!!!

Geoff.

Murray, yes you can use sandpaper glued to glass to sharpen. Works well. Use spray glue, and 800 grit will be plenty sharp enough I would think. I start at 60 and work my way down...

There's a good video on preparing the Narex chisels using abrasive on glass here
Workshop Heaven Sharpening Chisels - Practice - YouTube
It really is that easy.
I'm very happy with mine. It sure beats flattening the backs of old Titans. Even the Berg/Beavers will need a bit of work.
Best wishes
Steve

Hi Poppa and Stuffy
I have decided to sharpen with the sandpaper method. I did some of my old stanleys to try and works somewhat well. I just need practice.
I like that video Stuffy,. I will watch it later as I tried now but company just came in.
Thanks everyone for helping me out with the chisels. Oh, I bought a 10" wet grinder also so will be trying that very soon. Grizzly T10010
