    Default Before and After

A couple of weeks ago I posted pics of prototype plane that I had just completed. Inspired by some of Bill Carter's work I wanted to try some coloring techniques to give this plane some aged character. After much experimenting I decided to give it a go.

The brass bits went just as I had expected, however when I was applying the same process to the plane body there was a point in which I was sure I had ruined it. With nothing to lose I went forward with the application and finally achieved the look that I was seeking.

Unfortunately the back bevel disc on the iron was stainless and did not take the treatment. No worries though, I have another batch of irons coming from the heat treater that don't contain this feature.

I'll post before and after pics,

    Ron

Hi Ron, I think you make some of the most beautiful planes I have ever seen. If I had one I would have to have it somewhere that I could see it very regularly. It looks great in the before and after pics. My feeling is though making things look old to give them the look of patina and years of use defeats the purpose of making them. Other guys on this forum have spoken about the tools they have that belonged to their fathers and grandfathers or just people who have used them for many many years prior to them being able to use them. The feeling they have using these old beautiful tools is something that can't, I think, be manufactured. Age takes time and comes with the associated experience of that time. I have seen furniture made to look old but to my mind it just looks wrong.
I must say again how really beautiful your planes are, even the 'pre-aged' one, but personally if I buy something new I want it to age with me not prematurely.
By the way I have your site bookmarked so I can have a regular drool.
    Cheers

would agree that it looks great.... Can I ask how or what sort of aging processes did you use?

    Cheers
