Thread: berg question?

Can't answer your other questions, Shedbound, but the matter of stamps on the smaller sizes has come up before. IIRC, the consenus was that some, but not all, 1/4" were not stamped on the blade.

No sweat, Sh-b. I'm surprised one of our Bergaholics hasn't weighed in to sort us out.

Forgot to mention that the 1/8 size must've been too small to bother stamping at all. The half dozen or so I've seen had no stamp. I have two, and one still had a legible Berg decal, the other had the remains of the decal, so I'm pretty confident of their pedigree. The impression I get from various posts on the topic is that if it looks like a Berg & it's from that era, it's probably a good chisel, stamp or no stamp.....

Regarding the red handled chisels, I have seen berg handles only with Berg engraved blades. But I've seen Bahco handles with and without Bahco engraving on the blades. I've also seen Berg handles with bahco engraved blades, unlikely a replacement for a worn blade since the handles were in basically mint condition. I supposed someone had a few new Berg handles laying around and later attached a bahco blade.

Far as I can tell there is no difference in quality. Then again, most chisels seem to work ok. The 6-32mm usually go for 70-180 sek on an online auction depending on condition. Mint Bergs more, of course.

I'm trying to share what little knowledge I have of this, but the website keeps shutting down on me, everytime i try to post it. are you using IE9?

If so, your experience is a known problem

I've seen 1/4 inch Bergs with engraving as well as etching, as the Danish gentleman's pictures confirm. I've yet to see a small size Berg chisel in top condition that lacked a mark on the blade. But I've seen many used ones that do. my guess is that the etchings just wear away with use, either by regular rubs with a rag or a quick clean up with steel wool.

In Sweden the weather is harsh on tools, and many would have been kept in an unheated shed or damp cellar. In the spring after the snow melts, one might go out to the shed and find a bit of rust on one's tools. A quck rub over with steel wool and oil would fix the problem, and after a couple of seasons any etching would be gone.
