Block plane Identification
Hello all I haven't posted for a long time as I have been a little obsessed with another hobby Paintball. I have decided to finally put down on paper for a report for the treasurer what equipment I need for building a bed and 2 bedside cabinets.
I have two block planes at the moment a 220 and what I think is a 9 1/4 but with the later I am a little unsure of the identification as it seems the 60 1/2 is similar in looks ( it also seems to have an adjustable mouth?). The plane does also not have the number stamped into it . It appears to be a older USA made version.
The consensus here seems to be that a 9 1/4 and a 60 1/2 are a good start pref Lie Nielsen although I dont have the $$$ to go there the budget may eventually stretch to replacement hock or LN blades.
Question is how do i tell what one I own so I can complete my basic kit. ill post some so people can help me on this one."All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing"

Hiya Kiwi,
If your plane is the 9 series, it would be a 9 1/2 (adjustable mouth), the best way to tell which one you have is the blade angle.
The 60 1/2 is low angle (12 degrees I think), the 9 1/2 is bedded at 20 degrees.
You may find the model number stamped on the side of the plane (this is where my 9 1/2 and 9 1/4 have it).
Hope this helps,
Stu

Would the 60 1/2 also have the let-in thumb indentations on the sides?

My 601/2 has the thumb indents.

9 1/2
Well as it's a stanley with the vertical depth adjusting post, it's a 9 1/2.
The 9 1/4 is the same, but no adjustable mouth.
Nice handy plane this one. Looks in good condition.

Will have to keep my eyes open for a 60 1/2 for the low angle option

I"m jealous! I've been looking for a decent user 9 1/2 or 60 1/2 around Brisbane for close to a year now, with no joy!
Cheers, Richard
